And yes, I always make big groups put in a pound for the service if it's been good.
I don't think we get to figure out if the waiter/waitress keeps it entirely. The tips run down the line, to busboys, the bar, etc, usually, unless you're talking 'diner' food. They all work hard, and unless they're complete ****s they should get something. Whilst growing up, it's always been about 10%, but now I'm hearing 15% is the new low, and 20% is on par. Eh, I just want to eat something, enjoy the food, and leave, not have to pay a mortgage on someone's house. Large parties are a different event, altogether.

That all being said, I give 15% if they're good, if exceptional, 17%-20%. Much better to cook at home and have a nice meal without the worry. But we all must get out from time to time.
