Heterosexuality is evolutionary "normal", so homosexuality viewed in the context of any species, is an anomaly that could potentially have repercussions for the survival of the species.
So you see, it probably does need to be explained. Genetically, homosexuality is a terrible thing. Our genes drive us towards puberty, so we can become fertile and reproduce, then they keep us around long enough to raise that child.
Don't confuse modern opinions on homosexuality with the evolution of species to be able to reproduce.
