Default Sony will earn $2-$3 for every Xbox One sold

Having a Blu-ray drive was one of the big advantages of the PS3 over Xbox 360. This is set to change next generation, with both consoles supporting Blu-rays. However, this has come at a cost for Microsoft.

Blu-rays were able to beat out HD DVDs in the format war.

In this week’s episode of ‘Pach-Attack’, an analyst from Wedbush Securities named Michael Pachter was able to estimate how much Sony would earn from the Blu-ray license. The figure he came up with is two to three dollars, or around two pounds, per console sold. Considering how many Xbox Ones are expected to sell, this could work out to be quite a lucrative sum for Sony, with Pachter estimating the full amount to be between $150 to $200 million. While this is not a game-changing amount for either company, it’s amusing to hear that Microsoft must pay their main competitor for every console they put on the market.
