Through most of the seventies and particularly the early eighties men wearing makeup was much more common than it is today. My granddad told me that in the twenties barbers would do make up with a haircut and shave for a Friday night out, to help their male customers attract women (think of silent film stars). Fashions change, but men have often been the peacocks.
Incidentally Brian Dowling is always caked.
