Teenage girls drown after leaping into river to celebrate school holidays
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...iver-wear.html
Quote:
TWO teenage girls drowned yesterday after leaping into a river to celebrate the start of the school holidays.
Witnesses said one girl disappeared below the surface and her pal jumped in to try and save her.
Both vanished in treacherous currents as friends on the river bank screamed in horror.
One teenage boy almost died trying to reach them, but a passing hero dived in and hauled him out.
Police and rescue services launched a huge search of the River Wear near Washington, Tyneside, and two bodies were recovered by divers late last night.
A police spokesman said: “The families of both girls have been informed.”
The girls, thought to be 14, were named locally as Chloe Fowler and Toni-Beth Purvis.
A witness said: “I was running up and down the bank trying to see something, but they’d gone.”
Another local said: “Everyone knows the currents are really strong and you shouldn’t swim in the river. The currents are so strong they suck you under. Kids just don’t realise the danger — it’s so sad.”
Police investigating the tragedy, praised the mystery man who rescued the teenage boy.
— LIFEGUARDS used boats to save 13 bodyboarders and two swimmers — some of them kids — who were swept away by a rip current at Perranporth beach, Cornwall.
