We would need to hear from Dan as to his personal reasons for leaving anyway, however my guess is he was distressed as he said, I have no reason to doubt that, I would have liekly been too,with the Jimmy Saville enquiry.
It is likely he wanted a good break from the force, he wanted to go on BB, the fuss from the Police when he went in was likely because he was given a choice leave the force or go on BB, not have both.
Or something along those lines.
The prize money of £100,000 max, if no money splits occur, is not that much really,as a Detective he would earn pretty good money in fact.

He chose to leave and go on BB clearly though.
