It's seen as a negative because it's Dan. Smart, good looking, popular in the house ex cop Dan with a great body and charisma to boot. I suspect it's mainly men who see his astuteness as negative. I may be wrong as

but my wife, my daughter and all their friends love Dan but my son and some of my buddies don't like him. I tell them they are jealous.
If skinny little Dexter was sussing out everything like Dan is he would be applauded and worshiped for it. He's a game player - not real - so it doesn't matter what he does. Dan is too real and brings too much reality and sense to the show for comfort for some people.
