I think if I was in a houseful of people who whispered abot me constantly and my attempts to be friendly were characterised as 'creepy' and 'too nice' I'd be unlikely to be on my best and most relaxed form.
Also, I think he likes the idea of being the wise counsellor and has got a little too caught up in that role. Unsuccessfully sadly
