Certainly I don't think there's much difference between an extremely effeminate gay man and a man wishing to be a woman - they're both attracted to men, both embrace feminine culture over masculine culture... I don't really see much of a difference.
Most people are ignorant to transgenderism, it's not something that's openly discussed in this country so of course not many people are going to understand it. Homosexuality was in the same predicament until more gay people started appearing in public life and people began to see them as equal and understand different sexualities. I don't really hold it against anyone because it's a societal problem not an individual one, as long as people aren't total ******s and refuse to call people by the gender they wish to be known as (that's just a respect thing IMO, like if somebody changed their name to Kitchen Sink you should have to call them by that too) then they can think what they want to be honest

There's a lot of stuff I still don't understand about transgenders but it's a fascinating subject, what we need as a society is more discussion and research to be able to understand it, unfortunately it's not really an issue and so those that actually have to go through it are left at the bottom of the pile, just as many other minorities have been and still are

As a side note there's biological males that wish to become female but are attracted to females, they are gay though as a result. So it's not always a case of trying to hide their sexuality and actually to go against that I'd personally say that admitting to being homosexual would be much easier than admitting you wanted to change gender, the latter is something much less accepted which would cause more trouble than it's worth so I'm not totally buying that argument
