We make the following recommendations as ways which may deter cats from a garden:
The use of prickly plants and ground cover plants to hide the bare soil that is so attractive to cats. The watering of flowerbeds, as cats don’t like walking over damp earth;
A low-pressure water spray; however it is important to ensure that this does not cause distress to the cat or lead to pain, injury or suffering. The water jet must never be directed straight at a cat, and care must be taken when using a spray not to cause a cat to injure itself or bolt into a dangerous situation, for example, into the path of traffic or a dog;
Chicken wire can be used to protect specific areas and is preferable to netting which wild animals can become caught in;
There are a variety of approved chemical repellent products on the market but it is important to ensure a product is licensed and the instructions are read carefully. The chemical should be approved by the Chemicals Regulation Directorate under the Control of Pesticides Regulations for the particular animal and situation in question.
