That said I cant disagree with your sentiment that wishful thinking can be beneficial to many - that however does not make it true, worthy of respect or something to be encouraged.

Faith is what gets people out of bed in the morning when they have a serious illness and there's only a 5% chance that they might live. Faith is that 5%, that little ray of hope that gets people through the day and gives them the desire to want to see tomorrow too. Faith doesn't have to be religious. Faith is simply the belief that your life is worth something, means something and you shouldn't give up on that, in my opinion. So what if people are brought up to believe in something that might not exist? If that belief gives them the inner strength to achieve good things in their life then what does it matter?
Oh, and, I'm an atheist.
