I agree. He'd been accused of sitting on the fence and then having no balls. He was standing up for himself and explaining his behaviour. He's quite a sincere man. He does appear to be a bit easily influenced to change his mind, but perhaps that is just because he is fair-minded enough to be able to see both points of view.
