Marius was born in captivity and so no more "wild" than a KFC chicken. The purpose of these creatures existence is a purely human concept: it means nothing to the animals themselves. The Aberdeen Angus isn't thinking, in its final moments, "well, I was bred to make a damn good burger so I guess this is fair enough, would be tragic if they killed a giraffe though."
Most of the public outcry is simply because "Marius" has been humanized. he's been named, had "cute" pictures attached to him and his very own X factor sob story crafted. Three old goats could have died in his place and no one would have batted a soggy eyelid... it's utter hypocrisy.
