Not being for gay marriage and being homophobic isn't always the same thing. Sure, it tends to overlap, but I know people who have traditional views on marriage but don't actively have a problem with gay people.
Dave in BB11 didn't seem homophobic, he was friends with Mario for most of the series if I remember correctly.
