Correct nodis. "The gays" is unacceptable. Gay people is correct tho.
It's funny actually, but there is so many slang words and ways to describe gay people, I can't believe it?

How many can you think of Baz? which would be acceptable, which would offend? That's a hard one.

I am sure many would offend, But to refer to someone as "The Gays" may offend someone just as much as saying, well, "The English". You are generalising on people as Stropz said. People are individuals and should not be generalised.
