I know an Irish woman who has lived most of her life in England and calls herself English, but she wasn't born here.
I don't think it matters too much, but sometimes it is due to pride.

When Wimbledon comes back this summer, we shall be supporting Tim Henman, as he is English, but Andy Murray is Scottish, but fans look at him as English, as they cheer, "Come on England"
