Thats an interesting question of which I don't think there is a definitive answer.

In theory age should not matter in practice it can but might not.

Taking age as age should be a 17 year old should be in a different mental maturity state than a 14 year old therefore the two should not WANT to mix...

However the deciding factor is not just the age of a person but the mental age instead. A 14 year old with a mental age a couple of years older and a 17 year old with a mental age of a couple of years younger will af course feel at home with each other.

At the other extreme a 17 year old with a mental age of 19 mixing with a 14 year old with a mental age of 12 I think would not be desirable as the older you are you are interested in "Adult " activities which woul not be a good influence for a child of a mental or real age of 12 or 14.....

One can always be friends with anyone of any age but when it comes to a social life with such then an older person my be unsuatable for a child to be with.

In my opinion a 17 year old should be with other 17 year olds or older. Not with children as at 17 you are almost an adult and all that comes with that status. A 14 year old is no where near adult status....

Just my two pence worth from a senior citizen age group.......
