Ashleigh is Chris' friend. He loves her as a friend, thinks the world of her as he has stated several times. Danielle said to Ashleigh, Chris and Mark that Pav was infatuated with Ashleigh and always staring. That part of the conversation was edited out of the main highlights show. It was edited out AGAIN on the most recent main highlights show. A casual viewer has no idea that Danielle said those comments to the Power Alliance.
Because of the heavy boos, Chris believe that what the ex housemates said was true, so he was being protective of his friend.
