It's difficult to tell with only highlights how much time they actually spend together.

I don't think Ashleigh looks upon him as some type of protector, if anything it's the other way around. Ashleigh has the capability to get on fine with the any of the others, Chris is kinda limited, he's socially awkward.

Remember when Dani & Ashleigh were friends, despite being younger, Ashleigh was like the grown up in their friendship. And for the most part I think it's the same with Chris. And what I meant be saying he's a friend that she feels safe with is, that he will never vote her and that being friends with him she won't get accused of fancying the person she's hanging out with, and if she was great friends with Winston, it would be a press story, and people would read far too much into their friendship.

So yea I think Ashleigh is the dominant one in her friendship with Chris.
