I have noticed for some time that Ash likes Ashleigh and has no problem with her, and vice versa. I think Ashleigh thinks differently about him than she did six weeks ago, when he was laughing along with Helen as she called people names. She couldn't touch Helen with her free pass, so she went for her bestie Ash who seemed to encourage her nastiness.
But as she has gotten to know Ash better, she likes him. And he likes her, and it seems he now realizes Helen has been poisoning him against Ashleigh, which is understandable in a way as she wanted him on her side.
Nice to see him being honest, as he has been with Helen the last few days, sometimes in a jokey way - but still letting her know the score.
Yeah I'm glad to see he does have a mind of his own. I used to believe he was just up Helen's arse and nothing else, but for him to say this when Helen was mid-rant about what Ashleigh has been saying about her showed he is able to be honest with Helen even if she wouldn't necessarily agree.

I feel that Ashleigh and Ash's tension was partly an unfortunate result of the "house divide", and as you say, over time she's been more able to see him for him and not just as Helen's sidekick.
