They were specifically speaking about Stephanie at one point, and James was explaining that Stephanie is a complete germophobe and I think this is how the topic of showering came up.
Whether James did it out of goodness to try and help Gary out, or whether he did it for his own comfort I'm not sure.
Whatever his reasons though, Gary seemed extremely grateful to James for telling him, and thanked him. So I do think he was right to tell him.
If as I suspect though, that James went running to tell all the housemates what he said to Gary about taking a shower then that was a complete dickhead thing to do. Should have been kept between themselves. I didn't like George going on about it to other housemates either as this was a bit disrespectful to be poking fun at a much older man. (and I am usually a fan of George)
James can be an absolute dick but he does seem to make an effort to communicate better with Gary and he does tell him straight what issues are annoying people instead of just bitching about it.
His major downfall though is that "helpfulness" comes across as extremely patronising at times and him and his friends do seem to see and treat Gary as a bit of a senile imbecile sometimes. (Although that being said, James has said that despite Gary's faults he finds him absolutely fascinating, he just seems to bug the fcuk out of them)
Did find the conversation Gary had with Stephanie kinda funny when he was describing his shower in detail. How the shower gel was "slimy" and the water made him red like a lobster. Don't know if I'm reading the situation wrong but sometimes I think Gary is deliberately taking the piss and poking fun at some of the housemates who are mean to him.

I pretty much agree with all of your post...very good one!
I think there was a misunderstanding in his first argument with Gary. When Leslie put on the rubber glove and James leaned over and said 'I assume the position' he didn't mean it as a gay joke, he was referring to getting into position for a doctor's examination of the prostate where the doctor inserts a finger...(the glove and bending over joke.)
Gary took it as a gay thing and said about getting butt ******* and it went downhill from there....that was my reading of it anyway.
