My suspicion is this: due to his brain damage and deafness, he has occasionally bumped into people. Perhaps not knowing they were behind him or lacking depth perception to see how far away they are.
Why else would he do this?

Stephanie clarified the bumping into comment on BOTS last night. Apparently lauren and Gary were getting ready in the morning in the bathroom, and Gary opened a drawer that bumped in to lauren. That's what they are referring to. He doesn't go around walking into them
