Meteorologically speaking this is the 23rd day of autumn
Astronomically speaking its the the day when the darkness of night equals the light of day but that really has little bearing on our weather which occurs in the 10 miles above our heads.
By using astronomical means for seasons you get the ridiculous situation where you are referring to the 20th of December as autumn.
