So as the strange creature called Cal slowly crawled towards me - bringing me back to the present - I looked at 'its' useless, lifeless legs, dragging along the floor behind its grotesquely misshapen body, and my fear was inexplicably replaced by sympathy. I slackened my grip on the knife, and retrieved from my pocket the piece of salt fish I had wrapped in my handkerchief. I threw the salt fish onto the floor and Cal stopped dead. The creature lowered his head to sniff the fish, momentarily forgetting about me, and I bolted towards the stairs to make my escape. I took the steps two at a time, my heart pounding. Behind me, the creature let out an unholy roar then started to slither in pursuit. I had almost reached the bottom step when....
