A lot of money that goes to charity gets spent on overheads, administration and so on and only a small percentage actually ends up reaching the cause that you donate it to.
There is a few websites online that you can use to evaluate how much percentage of your donation actually goes directly to the charity.
Some charities actually invest the money too.
