I think the ending can be interpreted in different ways, I saw it with my boyfriend and his brother and me and his brother agreed but my boyfriend saw it differently.
I thought the Babadook was an allegory for grief or mental illness...the more you deny it, the stronger it gets. So now that the Mother acknowledges it she begins to manages it, feeding the Babadook was her way of showing she now controlled her metal state.
My bf's argued that the tv report in the movie of the mother killing her son was true and a flash forward to what the mother would do at the party and everything was basically her imagination.
