People have a right to automatically be treated with respect, it's not something you demand they 'earn' through behaving in the 'proper' way. If that's how it works then you're not going to be respecting many people, and maybe such an attitude will mean you don't earn the respect of many others. It's not like there is one 'right' way to behave that everyone must aspire to, people are free to make different lifestyle choices with how they act, how they dress and how they behave.
