This is not untrue. The Old Testament is exceptionally violent and encourages exceptional violence. Most modern faiths consider most of it to be allegorical though... for their own convenience in my opinion, because human nature is actually more gentle than religious doctrine and most people in the modern world can't stomach that ****.
Any faith that seeks to interpret the bible literally can only really be quite brutal. Not just Islam, of course... all of the Abrahamic religions.
