Apprenticeships are low paid. They have always been low paid, but you're learning a saleable skill. Of course, you could be at college or uni paying them for the privilege of getting a qualification.
Regarding Job Centres... I would vote for any party who shook up these places and made them work. They're terrible, soulless places full of people who would struggle to get employment outside the public sector because they have no people skills and flaunt the little power they have.

Old style apprenticeships were fine, they taught you decent skills that you wouldn't have had chance to learn otherwise. The ones I dislike are the ones like apprenticeships in Morrisons, all it is is a way to get people to do the same amount of work for less money.
