Paul, a businessman, has bipolar disorder. When psychotherapist Philippa Perry first meets him, he is in full delusional flow. Words and barely coherent ideas burst from him as he outlines his plans to build an opulent hotel: “That’s where the Pope will stay when he comes here.”
But highs can quickly become crushing lows as sufferers are crippled by misery. Sian has extreme mood swings and has made three suicide attempts. She tells Perry of her “constant internal dialogue”. Musician Ashley, meanwhile, seems to be rarely at peace, trapped in an exhausting life of despair and joy. In a sensitive film, Perry (wife of artist Grayson Perry) explores if circumstances and experience cause the disorder.
