In my opinion that word should never be used, even by black people. I realise that in America they use it in "jest" quite often in their films and music, but here we've taken a stand on it and know it causes offence to many, especially those who may have been bullied with the use of such words. I believe it's just respectful not to use these kinds of words, nothing to do with being PC at all. If something trivial that need not be said may offend someone, why say it in the first place?

People don't know where they stand with the word because half of the black community embrace it and the others despise it. Obvioulsly the intellegent thing to do as a caucasian is to play it safe and leave the word alone. If, as it says earlier in the thread that Charley had already reffered to herself as a "n*gga" in the house I can almost understand why Emily might have thought it was okay to say. She's made a major faux pas but I don't see how her trying to be cool makes her racist. The fact that she say her and her freinds use it all the time just shows how detatched from the real world she is. As I said before, a working class person with a bit more common sense and life experience would know that white people using the N word is rarely well recieved.
