That's irrelevant - if you know the meaning of it and say it to another black person: surely it brings back terrible connotations, and you all then sit down and think about what you've said?

No, it's made out to be a jokey term, completely the opposite to the meaning if a white/other race uses it. It's absurd. If you don't like the word, don't use it.
