I wanted to join the army. After the initial intelligence tests, which I passed. I was asked which career within the army I wanted to pursue. (At that time I was just 4' 11˝'' and 7stone soaking wet. I'm still the same height, but considerably heavier)
When I said Military Police, they just laughed at me. Then I said Driver and I was told that apart from staff cars I would find it difficult to manage heavy vehicles. Then I said dog handler.
A sergeant asked me 'What would you do if a dog went savage'? I replied 'Run'. He shook his head and said, 'No, you would shoot it'.
Quite annoyed I replied 'You didn't tell me I had a gun'.
Anyway for all that they still wanted to sign me up, until the medical when I foolishly said I had had rheumatic fever as a child.
My own doctor told me later that if I had said nothing about it, they would never have known!
Anyway after that I decided to 'run away to sea' and so began my merchant navy career.
