He told her he would come back and help her... But then went back later after her mum called looking for her (presumably hours later)? My hypothesis would be that he probably planned to get someone else to come back and help with him, but he was so out of his face that he went home and passed out, then was woken hours later by the phone call by which point it may well have been too late.
