The idea that the army is there just to kill people is a very old fashioned view. They do much more than go to war. The British Army were one of the first organisations to react to the ebola crisis, for instance. Also, you have to be quite bright to get into the army, the days when they'd take anyone are long gone.
The British Army is a highly professional organisation and I'm sure the last thing they want is a load of people who don't want to be there. I do agree with some kind of national service but those conscripted should be able to choose - as the system used to work in Germany (suspended in 2011 I believe). They could choose to work with the elderly, for instance.
