Basically, if you call yourself a derogatory term it is seen as 'self-deprecating' (and to make fun of yourself is usually seen as a positive quality). If you call someone else a derogatory term you are putting him or her down without their consent and it is just derogatory.

Point taken, but will the people watching the show be able to differentiate between the two meanings?
Many people will assume that because Charley was not punished that the use of the word is somewhat acceptable within society, whatever your race may be.
