You are actually correct here T.S.

High speed chsases are useless. On programs like; 'Traffic Cops UK' they chase knobs doing over 100 mph for miles through city streets, back roads and motorways and often 5 or 6 vehicles plus the helicopter is involved - not to mention 20 or so backroom cop employees - involving risk to property and innocent lives, only for the criminal to be caught then let off with a suspended sentence, small fine or even probation.

Around £50,000 cost to the tax-payer and all that risk for this?

Why bother.
