Ultimately, it's us the viewers who are to entirely to blame. The old (proper) format wouldn't be watched by viewers today who need instant gratification, and constant confrontation. Hence ratings would fall and the show would be taken off.
It's true people want instant gratification, but that is another reason why the live coverage is important. When you have people waiting 24 hours to find out what the hell is going on, it just seems like such a sloooow process. People used to know exactly what was going on as it happened, and they tuned in to see how it was all put together on the HL. The forums were busy throughout the day, today, what with 24/7 social media sites, twitter would be the same. And when things did kick off, live, there would be a big buzz about it. There's none of that today.

The live coverage had immediate impact, it was at certain times exciting, and if nothing else it made people care about the housemates. All the desperate stunts and stupid twists don't mean a thing if you don't care about the people involved, hence the reason they are now relying on housemates who people did once care about. That's the position they're now in.

The basic format of BB, which is 12 - 14 housemates (they put far too many in these days), 24/7 live coverage and nominations/evictions is a good format. But Channel 5 have turned their back on that. and in actual fact, the moment channel 4 started messing with it, the show started to struggle.
