It happens though, I have been out with a large group of friends and some get the view you are avoiding them when you aren't.
Joel told Cristian he wasn't ignoring him and Jack.
The house has a lot of people in it, a lot going on, arguments here and there,some not too bad some ridiculously so.
You cannot just be around all the same people all the time.
I think maybe as you indicate, Cristian feared the loss of Joel's friendship,I don't think he will lose that unless he pursues this route of trying to tell Joel what to do.
That house does the craziest of things to people and you have to find the best coping mechanism you can while in there.
That is all, I think anyway, that Joel and in fact many of them are doing.
No rejection really intended to past and close friendships/connections.
