I finally cracked it after 2 months. If anyone else has this issue this is what to do:
- Open siri, and ask "read all unread messages". They will tell you when it was sent, by who, and then what it is.
- When you get one which starts with "power" and then a string of random arabic text, tell siri to reply.
- You can reply with anything. I personally responded with "Thanks for crashing my phone, arsehole." This will fix it completely and you can open it up as normal, including the text itself.
I don't have the person who sent it in my contacts, but I've put their number on my twitter and facebook, asking anyone who knows them to let me know. I am going to go Helen Wood on whoever it is if I know them.
