He thought he had no need to
try to be liked as he thought his so called 'charm' and banter (which was mostly cruel and nasty) would have the majority of the public doting on him automatically for the 'entertainment' he was bringing. He was wrong and got shown the door = not socially smart. As I've said, he should have shown more of his nicer side to redress the balance.
