The impression I got from a lot of documentaries/interviews was that Channel 4 saw it as being more hassle than it was worth- there were so many complaints and controversies within just one or two years that some people thought it would damage their reputation if it continued so didn't renew the contracts.
To me it's remarkably similar to what happened to BB Australia on Channel 10- there was a lot of snobbery and even an MP (it may even have been the Australian Prime Minister) said it should be taken off air. I guess BB is a difficult show to produce because it can be so unpredictable- you can either try to contain it and make it more family friendly (like BBAUS 2012-2014- look how well that worked out), or let everything play out naturally and face the tidal wave of negativity from some parts of society and the media when something goes wrong.
