it was unsafe for many travelling late at night on trains in the past, I personally always picked the busiest carriage if i was travelling late at night. I did witness a drunken attack on a passenger, where we all got up and restrained the drunk. Job done.
These days, all trains have cctv installed, so they are much, much safer than they used to be. In fact I haven't seen any incidents since they were installed, so I'm not sure the issue really exists now. Of course there will always be the occasional nutter, but women only carriages aren't going to prevent someone who really wants to cause problems from doing anything.
