Default Black Mirror moves to Netflix

Quote:
Netflix has swooped to nab Charlie Brooker’s dark comedy Black Mirror away from Channel 4.

Brooker’s production company House of Tomorrow, which he set up with long-time collaborator Annabelle Jones in July 2014, has agreed a “multiple episode” deal with the SVoD giant, according to the Radio Times.

The move is a blow for Channel 4 with Netflix likely to launch the show internationally across all of its territories, including the UK and the US. The show launched on Netflix in the US at the end of 2014 and has been a success for the OTT service.

House of Tomorrow, which is part of Endemol Shine Group, is expected to partner with Endemol Shine Group North America on the series after it emerged that the fledgling indie was eying a US version of the show in January.

“Black Mirror has achieved a cult following in America,” Jones previously told Broadcast. “Several film studios and networks are really interested in it, but are probably quite scared of the anthology structure, with no continuity of character or storyline.”

Channel 4 has aired two series of the dystopian drama and the broadcaster is in talks to seal a second window linear broadcast.

The second series of the show generated an audience of 1.9m (9.3%) over its three episodes in February 2013, while its White Christmas special in December 2014 was watched by 1.9m (7.7%).
