Night Twelve - It Follows
Even though the film is unique and creative and does contain some great moments I don't think it is worthy of its critical acclaim it has received. The opening scene is intriguing to the viewer and draws the viewers interest. The girls leg snapped backwards on the beach was so gory and disturbing, it left me drawn in from the start. It's eerie atmosphere maintained for the first ten/twenty minutes. Hugh 'seeing' a girl in the cinema who Jay didn't see left me intrigued and wanting to know more.
I do think the film has very large moments of being very boring though however. There are some scenes which last maybe as long as five minutes were no dialogue is used or there is not much movement or much going in terms of development (e.g. Jay in the hospital after her crash). It does lead a creepy atmosphere definitely the moments of silence but I do think they happened way too frequently and became annoying and left me thinking that actually a lot of parts in the film were very tedious.
The acting in the film was excellent though, considering the film was made on such a small and basic budget. Maika Monroe was fantastic and one of the best actresses I've seen in a modern horror. The scene where Jay was drugged with chloroform and tied to the wheelchair Maika was brilliantly convincing at portraying someone genuinely terrified and I think she maintained this high level of excellence throughout.
I do think the plot had the potential to be really good but I do think it did fall a little flat at times. I think the ending was very anticlimactic for the film. It didn't need to have like a movie chase scene or anything but I just don't think it felt like an ending somehow because it was a little dull. I do think the plot is clever and interesting and well thought out but I do think they could've done more with it.
Overall - 5/10
An okay but very forgettable film.
