i think its a very difficult area to progress in terms of personal interactions. There are many reasons for it, but it stems from the sheer range of disabilities and their range of severity. On top of that is the wish of the majority of disabled people not to appear disabled or for it to appear that they have any dependence on others for day to day life.
We have so many disabled friendly facilities now compared to what we had previously and this actually decreases general awareness of the issue rather than increase it.
I think the simple solution is that people shouldn't jump to conclusions about anyone that they have just met and take the time to observe and learn.
