My parents have never been at all protective. By the time I was 13 I'd go off camping for the weekend with my climbing friends who were all older than me but they didn't seem to worry about who these people were or was I going to be safe on the rock. By 15 I often didn't come home until the early hours and they were always in bed asleep. They were so laid back they were practically horizontal.

It wasn't until I had my own children that I realized just how unprotected I'd felt as a child. It felt a bit like rejection, like they didn't really care. I love them to bits but I will always question why they were so lax with my sister and me.

I like to think I've been reasonable with my children. I wouldn't say I'm over protective but I've always needed to know they are safe.
