Night Seventeen - The Amityville Horror
While I do think the film has real moments of greatness what had me hooked. I think the film is quite heavily flawed in certain aspects and I certainly have mixed feelings about The Amityville Horror.
One aspect I do like about the film is the consistent odd situations going on throughout the film. Theirs lots off odd small things happening constantly right from the first ten minutes and throughout. The flies, the money going missing, the babysitter being locked in the door with no lock on and the black liquid oozing from the toilet it was all really spooky and got me curious. Oh and the soundtrack to the film was completely terrifying! I think it was really good how they kept the viewer interested and also linked back to the main plot. I do think the film contained some unnecessary and boring scenes having said that, I didn't feel the film needed to drag on so long at certain points it almost felt as if they were just throwing anything in because they perhaps needed to fill a certain time slot.
I felt the acting was outstanding from Margot Kidder throughout the film (Much like her portrayal of Barbs in Black Christmas) and I did enjoy seeing her whole family dynamic as a whole. I think it was interesting to have George as the stepfather to her children as his mean and unjust treatment of Amy perhaps mirrored the fact that he didn't feel connected with her because he wasn't her child. It was an interesting route to go down. The whole 'Jody' business with Amy was also deeply disturbing.
I think the film is heavily flawed on its lack of actual content. I actually don't think I was that scared at all about anything apart from the theme tune. I don think much actually happens for me to talk about and I do kind of wish they had done a lot more with it. The film's biggest flaw for me though is definitely the ending! So anticlimactic! It just didn't end with a bang like it should've done. Not even a fizzle in my opinion more of one cinder flying out. George's wild rampage could've been really scary but it lasted for a whole of about two minutes and the actual ending scene was just kind of boring and crap.
