Night Eighteen - All The Boys Love Mandy Lane
I honestly think out of slasher movies from the noughties this is one of the best. It isn't just a mediocre remake of a slasher like most have been from that era (Black Xmas, House of Wax, Prom Night and so on) but actually I think it holds up quite strong in an era when new slasher films were in drastic decline.
One of the initial scenes in the film with the boy who fancies Mandy jumping into the pool but snapping his neck was so brutal and gory but I found it so pleasing. The deep Crimson blood just filling the pool as Mandy looked at Emmett it was so effective and symbolic and drew my attention into the film instantly. Unfortunately for the film for me it does go through a bit of a tedious patch for roughly fifteen/twenty minutes when the group are travelling down to where they are staying but I can't stay that annoyed because I think the film makes up for it later.
The group on a whole I liked. I found the female characters much more easier to get to terms with and I liked that they weren't one dimensional. Chloe and Marilyn came across as your typical sort of slut and bitch characters but they had so many layers to them such as Marilyn's insecurities over her weight and Chloe's loss of self esteem. The boys in the group weren't bad characters also for a slasher and didn't just fall into your typical slasher cliche roles. Mandy of course being the titular character was always going to be the main focus and I did really like her character, particularly her relationship with ranch hand Garth.
Emmett being the killer was believable and interesting. The actor who portrayed him was fantastic I thought at playing this genuine loony on the seek for revenge for those who outcast him due to the accident he caused at the start of the film. The killings were also really brutal and gory! Marilyn's in particular was toe curling as her jaw was snapped with the shotgun, all the deaths were different and were built up with great suspense I felt.
Mandy portraying both the final girl role and the killer was such a shocking yet phenomenal twist. Her calling Chloe over so innocently before stabbing her in the chest was so brutal and literally made my jaw drop in shock! Mandy was the true psychopath and not Emmett and that was shown through her turning on Emmett after their plan and deciding to add her to her death toll. An amazing twist and an amazing ending.
