I think what makes driving less scary is that there at least seems to be an element of control. If you're in a plane and you know it's going down... ... well, there can't be much worse.

Then again, you know it's going down for a few minutes and then you die instantly. A car crash MIGHT be death on impact, but on the other hand, it might be hours stuck in a wrecked car with limbs hanging off, knowing full well that you're on the way out but suffering anyway. Some of the stories I've read from emergency services regarding car wrecks. People still talking to them asking if they're going to be OK, when the emergency crew knows that half of their body is 50 metres south and it's only the weight of what's on top of them that's stopping them from dying instantly.
